According to the American Sun Protection Association (ASPA), over-exposure to the sun’s ultraviolet radiation is a leading cause in the development of cataracts and macular degeneration, both of which can cause blindness later in life. Sunglasses have the capability of reducing the amount of UV rays to the eye by 80%.
Although there are no industry standards for the amount of UV that sunglasses must block, we feel that you should look for sunglasses that are labeled as providing either 99% or 100% UV protection. Another acceptable label may say "UV absorption up to 400 nm", as this amount of coverage is equivalent to blocking at least 99% UV.
